Exercises for Flat Feet

Flat feet, or fallen arches, affect up to about one-third of the population. Among the many causes of flat feet are obesity, arthritis, and injuries. Other contributing factors include genetics, pregnancy, and aging. Certain diseases, such as muscular dystrophy and cerebral palsy are risk factors for flat feet. A few exercises can help to counter the pain, stress and gait problems associated with flat feet. First, sit in a chair, keeping your back straight. Roll a tennis ball back and forth under the arch of the foot. Continue for two to three minutes and switch feet. Second, stand with your feet directly under the hips. (You may wish to have a chair back or wall nearby for support, if needed.) Keeping the toes in contact with the floor, roll your feet outward and lift the arches as far as you can. This works the muscles that lift the arches. Repeat the arch lifts 10-15 times. Rest and repeat the set two more times. Before embarking on any new exercise regime, it is wise to discuss it with a medical professional. If you need more information on how exercise can help your flat feet, please consult a podiatrist.

Flatfoot is a condition many people suffer from. If you have flat feet, contact one of our podiatrists from Foot Care Centers of Palm Beach. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.

What Can Contribute to Ankle Pain?

Anyone who has experienced ankle pain is often aware of the difficulty this may cause while attempting to complete daily activities. The function of the ankle is to provide balance and stability to the body, and there are several bones, ligaments, and tendons that are found within it. Research has indicated it is the bone in the body that is injured most frequently, and it can happen from overuse, or a running injury. It can also occur while stepping off of a curb or uneven surface, which can stretch the ankle beyond its normal range of motion. It is suggested that people who enjoy participating in sporting activities perform strengthening ankle stretches and exercises, and this may help to provide proper conditioning. There may be existing medical conditions that can affect the ankle. These include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or post-traumatic arthritis. It may be difficult to put any weight on the ankle, and walking may be difficult or impossible to do. Ankle discomfort is not a normal ailment to have, and if you are experiencing this type of pain, it is strongly advised that you consult with a podiatrist who can determine what the source is, and treat it accordingly.

Ankle pain can be caused by a number of problems and may be potentially serious. If you have ankle pain, consult with one of our podiatrists from Foot Care Centers of Palm Beach. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Ankle pain is any condition that causes pain in the ankle. Due to the fact that the ankle consists of tendons, muscles, bones, and ligaments, ankle pain can come from a number of different conditions.

Causes

The most common causes of ankle pain include:

  • Types of arthritis (rheumatoid, osteoarthritis, and gout)
  • Ankle sprains
  • Broken ankles
  • Achilles tendinitis
  • Achilles tendon rupture
  • Stress fractures
  • Bursitis
  • Tarsal tunnel syndrome
  • Plantar fasciitis

Symptoms

Symptoms of ankle injury vary based upon the condition. Pain may include general pain and discomfort, swelling, aching, redness, bruising, burning or stabbing sensations, and/or loss of sensation.

Diagnosis

Due to the wide variety of potential causes of ankle pain, podiatrists will utilize a number of different methods to properly diagnose ankle pain. This can include asking for personal and family medical histories and of any recent injuries. Further diagnosis may include sensation tests, a physical examination, and potentially x-rays or other imaging tests.

Treatment

Just as the range of causes varies widely, so do treatments. Some more common treatments are rest, ice packs, keeping pressure off the foot, orthotics and braces, medication for inflammation and pain, and surgery.

Plantar fasciitis is a very common foot condition that affects a wide variety of individuals across the country. This condition occurs when the plantar fascia, which is the band of tissue that runs along the arch of the foot, becomes aggravated and inflamed due to repeated pressure and strain. Although plantar fasciitis causes pain that is primarily in the arch and heel of the foot, pain can sometimes feel like it is emanating to other areas such as the ankle. Plantar fasciitis can be confused with a ruptured plantar fascia. Although both conditions involve the plantar fascia, plantar fasciitis is defined by micro-tears to this band of tissue, as opposed to the more significant tears involved in a ruptured plantar fascia. Additionally, plantar fasciitis is often confused with the entrapment of the nerves. For example, when the tibial nerve becomes pinched, sensations of pain can be felt in the soles of the feet in a way that is similar to plantar fasciitis. One of the distinguishing factors, however, is that tingling and numbness can be felt in the soles of the feet with a pinched tibial nerve. If you are having difficulty determining whether or not your pain is due to plantar fasciitis or another condition, contact a podiatrist who can perform a proper diagnosis.

Plantar fasciitis can be very painful and inconvenient. If you are experiencing heel pain or symptoms of plantar fasciitis, contact one of our podiatrists  from Foot Care Centers of Palm Beach. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is the inflammation of the thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot, known as the plantar fascia, and causes mild to severe heel pain.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?

  • Excessive running
  • Non-supportive shoes
  • Overpronation
  • Repeated stretching and tearing of the plantar fascia

How Can It Be Treated?

  • Conservative measures – anti-inflammatories, ice packs, stretching exercises, physical therapy, orthotic devices
  • Shockwave therapy – sound waves are sent to the affected area to facilitate healing and are usually used for chronic cases of plantar fasciitis
  • Surgery – usually only used as a last resort when all else fails. The plantar fascia can be surgically detached from the heel

While very treatable, plantar fasciitis is definitely not something that should be ignored. Especially in severe cases, speaking to your doctor right away is highly recommended to avoid complications and severe heel pain. Your podiatrist can work with you to provide the appropriate treatment options tailored to your condition.

Sesamoiditis in Runners

Sesamoiditis is a particular kind of foot condition that primarily impacts the two small bones underneath the big toe. These bones are known as the sesamoids, and they are directly situated behind the joint in the big toe. Sesamoiditis occurs when these bones and the surrounding tendons become inflamed. Some runners can be particularly susceptible to developing sesamoiditis. This is because when an individual runs, they put a significant amount of pressure onto the sesamoids. As a result, runners might even fracture the sesamoids. If a runner uses poor form and improper running techniques, the extent to which the sesamoids could become strained is only exacerbated. Sesamoiditis can be particularly detrimental to runners because having this condition can make the act of running extremely painful. For example, it is difficult to run when your sesamoiditis makes your feet feel tender. You may also feel as though it is difficult or uncomfortable to put weight on your feet. Unfortunately, sesamoiditis can be a headache for runners. If you are a runner who has sesamoiditis or are looking to prevent this condition, contact a podiatrist.

Sesamoiditis is an unpleasant foot condition characterized by pain in the balls of the feet. If you think you’re struggling with sesamoiditis, contact one of our podiatrists of Foot Care Centers of Palm Beach. Our doctors will treat your condition thoroughly and effectively.

Sesamoiditis

Sesamoiditis is a condition of the foot that affects the ball of the foot. It is more common in younger people than it is in older people. It can also occur with people who have begun a new exercise program, since their bodies are adjusting to the new physical regimen. Pain may also be caused by the inflammation of tendons surrounding the bones. It is important to seek treatment in its early stages because if you ignore the pain, this condition can lead to more serious problems such as severe irritation and bone fractures.

Causes of Sesamoiditis

  • Sudden increase in activity
  • Increase in physically strenuous movement without a proper warm up or build up
  • Foot structure: those who have smaller, bonier feet or those with a high arch may be more susceptible

Treatment for sesamoiditis is non-invasive and simple. Doctors may recommend a strict rest period where the patient forgoes most physical activity. This will help give the patient time to heal their feet through limited activity. For serious cases, it is best to speak with your doctor to determine a treatment option that will help your specific needs.
