Bone Contusions

Contusions occur when an injured blood vessel leaks blood into the surrounding areas. On your skin, this typically means that a bruise will appear, with skin discoloration, tenderness, and pain. But did you know that you can also bruise a bone? Bones are made of tissues and blood vessels. An injury to the area, from a car accident, fall, or high impact sport for example, could make a blood vessel leak, creating a contusion. Symptoms of a bone contusion include stiffness, swelling, tenderness, difficulty using the affected area, and pain that lasts longer than the pain caused by a bruise elsewhere on the body. Bone bruises can take anywhere from a few days to a few months to heal, and recommended treatments vary based on the severity of the injury. If you are experiencing any foot or ankle pain, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist.

Ankle and foot injuries are common among athletes and in many sports. They can be caused by several problems and may be potentially serious. If you are feeling pain or think you were injured in a sporting event or when exercising, consult with one of our podiatrists from Foot Care Centers of Palm Beach. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Common Injuries

The most common injuries that occur in sporting activities include:

  • Achilles Tendonitis
  • Achilles Tendon Rupture
  • Ankle Sprains
  • Broken Foot
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Stress Fractures
  • Turf Toe

Symptoms

Symptoms vary depending upon the injury and in some cases, there may be no symptoms at all. However, in most cases, some form of symptom is experienced. Pain, aching, burning, bruising, tenderness, tightness or stiffness, sensation loss, difficulty moving, and swelling are the most common symptoms.

Treatment

Just as symptoms vary depending upon the injury, so do treatment options. A common treatment method is known as the RICE method. This method involves rest, applying ice, compression and elevating the afflicted foot or ankle. If the injury appears to be more serious, surgery might be required, such as arthroscopic or reconstructive surgery. Lastly, rehabilitation or therapy might be needed to gain full functionality in the afflicted area. Any discomfort experienced by an athlete must be evaluated by a licensed, reputable medical professional.

When skin becomes damaged due to friction or other causes, a pocket of fluid (blister) may form which acts as a protective layer, or cushion. Clear serum is the fluid inside of a blister which helps the skin heal and protects it from becoming infected. If the blister is filled with yellow or green pus, this can mean that an infection has set in. Proper treatment is necessary in order to get rid of the infection and to avoid potential serious complications. To help prevent blisters from forming on your feet, make sure your shoes fit well and are comfortable—with no areas that cause friction or put pressure on your feet or toes. Keep your feet dry by purchasing moisture-wicking socks. If you have an infected blister or frequently experience blisters on your feet, it is suggested that you seek the professional care of a podiatrist.

Blisters may appear as a single bubble or in a cluster. They can cause a lot of pain and may be filled with pus, blood, or watery serum. If your feet are hurting, contact one of our podiatrists of Foot Care Centers of Palm Beach. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Foot Blisters

Foot blisters are often the result of friction. This happens due to the constant rubbing from shoes, which can lead to pain.

What Are Foot Blisters?

A foot blister is a small fluid-filled pocket that forms on the upper-most layer of the skin. Blisters are filled with clear fluid and can lead to blood drainage or pus if the area becomes infected.

Symptoms

(Blister symptoms may vary depending on what is causing them)

  • Bubble of skin filled with fluid
  • Redness
  • Moderate to severe pain
  • Itching

Prevention & Treatment

In order to prevent blisters, you should be sure to wear comfortable shoes with socks that cushion your feet and absorb sweat. Breaking a blister open may increase your chances of developing an infection. However, if your blister breaks, you should wash the area with soap and water immediately and then apply a bandage to the affected area. If your blisters cause severe pain it is important that you call your podiatrist right away.

Tips for Your Child’s Footwear

As a child grows, having properly fitting footwear is important for the development of their feet. When choosing shoes for your child there are a few things that can be implemented to ensure their shoes fit properly. Since our feet are largest at the end of the day, shopping in the evening will help to make sure the shoes aren’t too tight. Measure your child's feet when they are standing and bearing their full weight, and be sure to measure and fit the shoes with the socks your child intends to wear with the shoes. It is also important to check that there is enough room for your child to wiggle their toes in the shoes and that the heel fits snug. Lastly, your child should walk in the shoes before purchasing them and they should immediately feel comfortable. If you have any questions about making sure your child’s shoes fit properly, a podiatrist will be able to help and make the best recommendations.

The health of a child’s feet is vital to their overall well-being. If you have any questions regarding foot health, contact one of our podiatrists of Foot Care Centers of Palm Beach. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Tips for Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

  • Make sure their shoes fit properly
  • Look for any signs of in-toeing or out-toeing
  • Check to see if they have Clubfoot (condition that affects your child’s foot and ankle, twisting the heel and toes inward) which is one of the most common nonmajor birth defects.
  • Lightly cover your baby’s feet (Tight covers may keep your baby from moving their feet freely, and could prevent normal development)
  • Allow your toddler to go shoeless (Shoes can be restricting for a young child’s foot)
  • Cut toenails straight across to avoid ingrown toenails
  • Keep your child’s foot clean and dry
  • Cover cuts and scrapes. Wash any scratches with soap and water and cover them with a bandage until they’ve healed.

One of the most common injuries that occurs while playing sports is an ankle sprain. An ankle sprain occurs when a sudden twist or force over stretches or tears the ligaments that connect to the bones in the joints. Common indications of an ankle sprain include swelling around the ankle, bruising, pain, and difficulty bending the ankle. Patients who are unable to walk on their ankle, have significant swelling, or have symptoms that last for multiple days should consult with a podiatrist for treatment. Because it can be hard to differentiate between an ankle sprain and an ankle fracture, patients who are experiencing significant pain in the ankle should consult with a podiatrist. A podiatrist will be able to evaluate the injury through tools like imaging to accurately diagnose and treat the injury.

Ankle sprains are common but need immediate attention. If you need your feet checked, contact one of our podiatrists from Foot Care Centers of Palm Beach. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

How Does an Ankle Sprain Occur?

Ankle sprains take place when the ligaments in your ankle are torn or stretched beyond their limits. There are multiple ways that the ankle can become injured, including twisting or rolling over onto your ankle, putting undue stress on it, or causing trauma to the ankle itself.

What Are the Symptoms?

  • Mild to moderate bruising
  • Limited mobility
  • Swelling
  • Discoloration of the skin (depending on severity)

Preventing a Sprain

  • Wearing appropriate shoes for the occasion
  • Stretching before exercises and sports
  • Knowing your limits

Treatment of a Sprain

Treatment of a sprain depends on the severity.  Many times, people are told to rest and remain off their feet completely, while others are given an air cast. If the sprain is very severe, surgery may be required.

If you have suffered an ankle sprain previously, you may want to consider additional support such as a brace and regular exercises to strengthen the ankle.
