Signs to Go to a Podiatrist for Ankle Pain

The ankle is composed of a variety of bones, ligaments, and tendons and is designed to allow the movement for the foot and support the body. Pain in the ankle can have a variety of causes that include sprained ankles, stress fractures, tarsal tunnel syndrome, arthritis, and Achilles tendonitis. Patients who are experiencing ankle pain should look for a few signs to determine if the care of a podiatrist is necessary. These signs include severe swelling, an open wound or deformity, signs of an infection, or the inability to bear weight. Less severe injuries may still need to be looked at by a podiatrist, if the swelling has been there for 2 to 5 days or the pain has not subsided after several weeks. A podiatrist will be able to properly diagnose the source of the pain as well as suggest the best course of treatment for the condition.

Ankle pain can have many different causes and the pain may potentially be serious. If you have ankle pain, consult with one of our podiatrists from Foot Care Centers of Palm Beach. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Ankle pain is any condition that causes pain in the ankle. Due to the fact that the ankle consists of tendons, muscles, bones, and ligaments, ankle pain can come from a number of different conditions.

Causes

The most common causes of ankle pain include:

  • Types of arthritis (rheumatoid, osteoarthritis, and gout)
  • Ankle sprains
  • Broken ankles
  • Achilles tendinitis
  • Achilles tendon rupture
  • Stress fractures
  • Tarsal tunnel syndrome
  • Plantar fasciitis

Symptoms

Symptoms of ankle injury vary based upon the condition. Pain may include general pain and discomfort, swelling, aching, redness, bruising, burning or stabbing sensations, and/or loss of sensation.

Diagnosis

Due to the wide variety of potential causes of ankle pain, podiatrists will utilize a number of different methods to properly diagnose ankle pain. This can include asking for personal and family medical histories and of any recent injuries. Further diagnosis may include sensation tests, a physical examination, and potentially x-rays or other imaging tests.

Treatment

Just as the range of causes varies widely, so do treatments. Some more common treatments are rest, ice packs, keeping pressure off the foot, orthotics and braces, medication for inflammation and pain, and surgery.

How Common Are Flat Feet?

Flat feet, the condition in which the arches in the center of the sole of the foot are absent when the feet are bearing weight, is quite common. Approximately 8% of adults in the United States have congenital flat feet, which occur when the arches fail to form during early childhood. An additional 4% have fallen arches, flat feet that are acquired due to a preexisting arch collapsing over time. While congenital flat feet are usually asymptomatic, fallen arches can often cause foot pain, cramping, and fatigue. Both people who have flat feet from birth and those who have acquired them over time may have an overpronated gait, a pattern of foot movement in which the feet roll too far inwards while walking. If you have flat feet and foot pain that is bothering you, it is suggested that you see a podiatrist for treatment.

Flatfoot is a condition many people suffer from. If you have flat feet, contact one of our podiatrists from Foot Care Centers of Palm Beach. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.

The Possible Causes of Heel Pain

There are many possible causes of heel pain, with plantar fasciitis (an inflammation of the connective tissue on the bottom of the foot) topping the list. Injuries during exercising or while playing sports can also cause heel pain, which can sometimes occur if you have not first properly stretched your calves, ankles, and feet. Running too frequently, training on hard surfaces, suddenly turning your heel inwardly, or coming down hard or landing awkwardly on your heel can all lead to painful injuries of the heel. Wearing shoes that do not sufficiently absorb shock or support the heel can also contribute to heel pain, as can bone spurs on the heel, swelling of the bursa sac at the back of the heel (bursitis), and conditions that affect the Achilles tendon (which attaches to the heel bone). Pain in the heel should not be ignored. A podiatrist can diagnose your heel pain to determine its cause and create a treatment plan to treat it accordingly.

Many people suffer from bouts of heel pain. For more information, contact one of our podiatrists of Foot Care Centers of Palm Beach. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Causes of Heel Pain

Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.

Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.

Heel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.

Why Might Heel Pain Occur?

  • Wearing ill-fitting shoes
  • Wearing non-supportive shoes
  • Weight change
  • Excessive running

Treatments

Heel pain should be treated as soon as possible for immediate results. Keeping your feet in a stress-free environment will help. If you suffer from Achilles tendonitis or plantar fasciitis, applying ice will reduce the swelling. Stretching before an exercise like running will help the muscles. Using all these tips will help make heel pain a condition of the past.

Taking care of your foot health is important at any stage of your life but becomes increasingly important with age. Older adults are more likely to have medical conditions that affect their feet, such as diabetes, poor circulation, neuropathy, or arthritis, and may also be at an increased risk of foot injuries, deformity, weakness, and pain. Poor foot health is often associated with a decrease in quality of life and lower independence in completing activities of daily living. Unfortunately, the feet are sometimes neglected when it comes to regular checkups. If you are an older adult, ignoring your feet could lead to problems. It is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist regularly to monitor your foot health and treat any existing conditions.

If you need your feet checked, contact one of our podiatrists of Foot Care Centers of Palm Beach. Our doctors will attend to all of your foot and ankle needs and provide you with quality treatment.

Geriatrics and Podiatry
When people age, some common issues that may occur are bone density loss, dry skin, poor circulation, and rough brittle nails. These issues may also affect your foot health if the necessary steps are not taken to alleviate the problems.

It is important to take care of your feet because feet that are injured or diseased can affect your overall health. Having painful feet hinders your ability to do daily activities or may decrease your willingness to do the things that you need to do.

Visiting Your Geriatrician
As we age, health problems become more likely, so it is essential to visit your doctor for check-ups to ensure that you are doing the best you can to take care of your health. It is recommended to check your feet frequently for any possible cuts, bruises, swelling, corns or any other irregularities.

Taking Care of Elderly Feet
Cracked or dry feet can be treated by applying moisturizer often. It is also important not to wear old socks because the older the sock is, the higher the possibility there will be that there is bacteria there. Wear fresh socks and make sure they fit properly.

Proper foot health means that you can have a more active lifestyle and you will not be bogged down by pain. Foot health also leads to good circulation, which is paramount for overall health.
