Flat Feet and Back Pain

As many individuals might already know, a common foot affliction called flat feet is present when a person’s entire foot lays flush against the floor. In other words, the arch of the foot is not discernable and the entire sole, or bottom, of the foot, touches the ground. Flat feet have an interesting connection to back pain that health-conscious people ought to know about. Specifically, having flat feet can increase an individual’s risk of experiencing back pain of some kind. Lower back pain in particular might be especially more likely. One potential explanation for this phenomenon is that flat feet are not able to effectively absorb force and shock. Flat feet also can put stress on other parts of the body, due to the biomechanical misalignment of the feet. Back pain can become more likely. If you have questions about flat feet and back pain, contact a podiatrist today.

Flatfoot is a condition many people suffer from. If you have flat feet, contact one of our podiatrists from Foot Care Centers of Palm Beach. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.

Toe Pain and Biking

Toe pain can be an annoyance for a variety of different individuals. Different kinds of activities can increase one’s susceptibility to toe pain or exacerbate existing toe pain. Cycling/biking is one such activity. If you are a cyclist that feels pain in their toes after cycling, then it is possible that your cycling shoes are simply too tight. Often, cycling shoes are more restrictive. Since one’s feet can expand in size during a session of cycling, this can make the feet feel as if they do not fit in the shoes. Toe pain might result from this. As a general rule, the toes should have sufficient space in one’s cycling shoes to move freely. This can potentially reduce the extent to which one might experience toe pain. If you are a cyclist, contact a podiatrist today for more information.

Toe pain can disrupt your daily activities. If you have any concerns, contact one of our podiatrists of Foot Care Centers of Palm Beach. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Two Methods That Can Determine Shoe Size

Wearing shoes that fit correctly is crucial in maintaining overall comfort while completing daily activities. Many people will try on several pairs of shoes before finding a perfect fit. It is beneficial to properly measure your feet prior to buying shoes, and this can be done by two different methods. Most shoe stores have a Brannock device, and this is generally effective in determining the correct shoe size. If this is unavailable, the foot can be measured while standing on a piece of paper. When the shoes and socks have been removed and the foot is lying flat on the floor, the foot can be traced. The results of the measurement may be more accurate when the foot is traced by someone else. Research has shown it is beneficial to purchase shoes at the end of the day when the feet are at their largest. Additionally, wearing the socks that would be worn with the intended shoes may help to ensure a proper fit. If you have questions and would like more information about how to find out your shoe size, please confer with a podiatrist.

Finding a properly-fitting shoe is important in reducing injuries and preventing foot problems. For more information about treatment, contact one of our podiatrists from Foot Care Centers of Palm Beach. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Proper Shoe Fitting

A common concern when it comes to foot health, having properly fitted shoes can help prevent injuries to the foot. Out feet affect our posture and gait, which in turn affects the biomechanics and overall bodily structure. With 33 joints, 26 bones, and over 100 ligaments, the potential for serious injury is much greater than one realizes. Although the feet cease growth in adulthood, they still change shape as they mature. Here are some factors to consider when it comes to investing in proper fitting shoes:

  • Be sure the shoes fit correctly right away
  • Ensure the ball of your foot fits comfortably in the widest portion of the shoes
  • Even though they may look fashionable, improper fitting shoes can either create adverse conditions or exacerbate existing ones you may already have
  • Walk along a carpeted surface to ensure the shoes comfortably fit during normal activity

Keeping in mind how shoes fit the biomechanics of your body, properly-fitting shoes are vitally important. Fortunately, it is not difficult to acquire footwear that fits correctly. Be sure to wear shoes that support the overall structure of your body. Do your feet a favor and invest in several pairs of well-fitted shoes today.

Morton’s neuroma is a foot condition that affects the nerves between the metatarsal bones in the foot. These are long bones, and there are affected nerves lying in between the bones. Fractured Ankles in Children

A fracture of a child’s ankle is when one or more bones are broken in the ankle. A child who has broken their ankle may experience pain and bruising as well as trouble putting weight on their ankle or foot. If this happens, medical help should be sought from a podiatrist who will examine the ankle, do an imaging test, and provide appropriate treatment based on the results. Usually, a support device such as a brace, cast, or splint will be provided to protect the ankle and help the child limit movement. Crutches may need to be used with such a device to decrease pain and help with mobility. Pain medication and further intervention might be needed as well, depending on the severity of the injury. To enable healing, the child should rest his or her ankle and elevate it above the heart level as much as possible. If your child has hurt his or her ankle and is in pain, it is suggested that a podiatrist be seen as soon as possible.

Broken ankles need immediate treatment. If you are seeking treatment, contact one of our podiatrists from Foot Care Centers of Palm Beach. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Broken Ankles
A broken ankle is experienced when a person fractures their tibia or fibula in the lower leg and ankle area. Both of these bones are attached at the bottom of the leg and combine to form what we know to be our ankle.

When a physician is referring to a break of the ankle, he or she is usually referring to a break in the area where the tibia and fibula are joined to create our ankle joint. Ankles are more prone to fractures because the ankle is an area that suffers a lot of pressure and stress. There are some obvious signs when a person experiences a fractured ankle, and the following symptoms may be present.

Symptoms of a Fractured Ankle

  • Excessive pain when the area is touched or when any pressure is placed on the ankle
  •  Swelling around the area
  •  Bruising of the area
  • Area appears to be deformed

If you suspect an ankle fracture, it is recommended to seek treatment as soon as possible. The sooner you have your podiatrist diagnose the fracture, the quicker you’ll be on the way towards recovery.
